The Child's Voice in Family Law
|
Hearing the child's voice
in family law matters:
Understanding without
undermining
Should children be heard regarding their
own future care and custody? When a parent's rights are to be
terminated?
What is a mature minor? When and how might a mature minor be heard in
court? How can others' pressures corrupt the child's voice?
Family
law professionals are charged with determining the child's best
interests but seldom know when and whether and how to elicit the
child's voice in matters regarding his or her own future. Some
jurisdictions invite the contribution of a "mature minor" but never
define what this means.
This presentation puts these questions in a developmental perspective
and provides participants with the tools necessary to better recognize
and respect the child's voice.

Parenting
Coordination
(introduction)
|
Escaping
the Revolving
Door:
Parenting
Coordination and the Best Interests of the Child
"Revolving door" litigants -post-decree
parents who cannot let go of their conflict and who repeatedly seek
court intervention- consume an inordinate amount of the court's time at
profound expense to all involved,
none more so than their children.
This presentation
introduces parenting coordination as one means of helping post-decree
parents to better understand their kids and settle their child-centered
differences without the delays, expenses and stresses associated with
courts. Participants are introduced to Dr. Garber's "DefCon" model of
parenting coordination: Assessing and responding to imminent threats of
conflict without allowing war to break out.

Assessing
and Enabling Children's
Attachment
Relationships
In The Midst of Co-parental Conflict, Separation and Divorce
Attachment
(e.g., Bowlby, Ainsworth) is among psychology's most respected and
validated theories. This multi-media, powerful presentation brings
attachment theory to the forensic psychologist's work. Attachment
theory is introduced in the context of family development,
function and dysfunction. The pros and cons associated with the
forensic application of existing attachment methodologies are discussed
with an emphasis on understanding and responding to a child's
visitation resistance and refusal.

Alienation
and
attachment |
From
Theory to
Therapy to Courtroom:
Attachment, Alienation
and The Best Interests Of The Child
This
unique and compelling full-day workshop integrates developmental
psychology's
most roibust and researched construct -attachment theory- into therapy
and
forensic evaluation. Bowlby's and Ainsworth's attachment paradigm is
moved
beyond the parent-child dyad into a family systems model which has
direct
and practical bearing on conducting therapy with kids and addressing
matters
of visitationa nd custody, among others. Sounds like psychobabble?
Dr.
Garber's
presentation is down-to-earth, common sense and useful today. New tools
are presented that participants carry back to practice immediately

Co-
parenting
intervention |
Uncoupled:
Co-parenting Interventions in
The Best Interests of The Child
Its
not divorce that harms children (although acrimonious litigation can
exacerbate existing pain). What harms children is co-parental conflict.
This means that clinicians and family law professionals must not wait
for
the paperwork to be filed and the hearing to be scheduled to identify
and
respond to the needs of children whose parents are conflicted,
separated
and divorcing.
This two-hour presentation discusses how
co-parental conflict is best understood, its impact on children in
school and among
friends, socially and emotionally. The Co-parenting Questionnaire (CPQ)
is introduced as one means of quantifying and tracking co-parental
conflict
over time. Directed Co-parenting Intervention is then introduced as a
new
means of working with highly conflicted co-parents in their children's
best
interests.

Taming
The Beast Within!
Anger Management
for
Ourselves and Our
Children
Anger
happens.
Unfortunately, very few of us recognize anger as it
builds from
annoyance to aggravation to frustration to rage like air filling a
balloon.
This interactive, engaging and provocative
presentation is a favorite
for teens and their parents, for adult community groups and in the
workplace.
"Taming The Beast Within" as a book and as a
presentation makes the
experience of anger normal and natural even while it helps participates
better understand how they do and how they could express their strong
feelings.
