Systemic Confounds
And The Voice Of The Child

International law, an increasing respect for the dignity of the child, and simple practical exigencies are leading more and more jurisdictions to directly involve children in matters concerning their future well-being. Unfortunately, the professionals involved in this process are seldom trained to interview children or to recognize the family system pressures that so often and so easily corrupt their voices.

Systemic Confounds
And The Voice Of The Child

The reality is that the pendulum is swinging back. After decades of believing that children should have little or no voice with regard to their future care and custody, jurisdictions across the English-speaking world are welcoming the child's voice more and more often. Empirical data support this change, but family law professionals are seldom trained to (1) interview the child or (2) understand the many forces that can corrupt the child's voice.

This full-day, advanced training for professionals across the spectrum of family law service answers this deficit. Topics include:
  • Why and how and when should the child's voice be heard?
  • What is a "mature Minor"?
  • How can bribes, threats and scripts corrupt the child's voice?
  • How can alienation, estrangement and enmeshment confound the child's voice?
  • How can adultification, parentification and infantilization confound the child's voice?
  • How can these various confounds be minimized proactively?
  • How can these various confounds be detected and interpreted?
